On 25th November 2019, the regulations governing the provision of legal services by solicitors in England and Wales (the "Regulations") changed following an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority to allow more diverse business structures within the legal services sector to increase competition and client access.
This means that solicitors are no longer limited to practising solely through regulated entities, such as law firms, or as authorised sole practitioners. In addition, solicitors may provide unreserved legal services through non-SRA regulated businesses. Cue Blue Lizard Legal.
Blue Lizard Legal is a legal services provider. Our lawyers are admitted as solicitors in England and Wales and are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (the "SRA"). Details of each solicitor can be found on www.sra.org.uk.
Please note that whilst our lawyers are regulated by the SRA, Blue Lizard Legal Limited is not a law firm and is therefore is not regulated by the SRA.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
Blue Lizard Legal provides commercial legal advice in unreserved, non-contentious commercial and IT matters. We remain committed to excellence and ensuring that the quality of the advice you receive is second to none. We do not conduct any "reserved" activities, namely:
1. the exercise of a right of audience (i.e. the right to appear before and address a court);
2. the conduct of litigation (the issuing of proceedings before any court in England and Wales, the commencing, prosecuting and defending of those proceedings and the performing of any ancillary functions in relation to those proceedings);
4. probate activities;
5. notarising; and
6. the administration of oaths.
All Blue Lizard Legal consultants hold current SRA practising certificates.
Blue Lizard Legal has professional indemnity insurance cover of up to £1,000,000 for any one claim and £1,000,000 public liability insurance cover.
We are not required to hold professional indemnity insurance that meets the SRA's minimum requirements for a regulated business, as would be the case for a law firm (typically a minimum of £2 million - £3 million per claim).
Should you feel that a higher level of insurance is required in relation to a particular matter, please feel free to raise this with us and we will do our best to find a solution.

If you have concerns about the behaviour of any of our lawyers, this can be raised with the Solicitors Regulation Authority, at www.SRA.org.uk.
SRA COMPENSATION FUND
As Blue Lizard Legal is not regulated by the SRA, you would not be eligible to make a claim on the SRA Compensation Fund. This is a discretionary fund set up and operated by the SRA to which all solicitors contribute.
Its purpose is to make grants to people whose money has been stolen, misappropriated, or otherwise not properly accounted for, or who have suffered loss for which a regulated person should have been insured but was not.
If your business has an annual turnover of £2 million or more, you would not be entitled to make a claim under the SRA Compensation Fund in any case.
